Ancient forms of hoof protection included leather and other materials secured around the hoof. The Romans used protective hoof coverings known as hipposandals, an early predecessor to the modern horseshoe.

Over the centuries, the nailed horseshoe evolved, and with it came the specialized profession of the farrier. Historically, farriers were highly skilled blacksmiths who forged horseshoes by hand, shaped them while hot, and carefully fitted them to the individual horse.

Traditional farriery was built upon the skills of the blacksmith. A farrier needed to understand how to heat, forge, shape, punch, modify, and finish steel in order to create a shoe that properly suited the horse.

While modern farriery continues to respect these traditional skills, the profession has developed into much more than blacksmithing. Today’s farrier must understand hoof anatomy, conformation, biomechanics, movement, workload, and the demands of different disciplines.
